BIRTHDAY CARDS
The cards here are for my fathers birthdays and range from 1939 to 1952. Most of them are from his early years and they show what cards were like for children during that time. My Granmother had the foresight to keep them, then my father kept them and now I look after them. As the cards are old some have become worn and fragile so I will not open them up. As a result some of the pictures below will appear a little off angle but it should not spoil the enjoyment of viewing them. The cards are listed under the years they are from, followed by the cards I am unable to date. Please enjoy.
And Thank you Nanna for saving them.
1939
One of the most precious cards to me. My fathers first birthday and the only one that he spent with his own Dad. In 1940 his dad was away training with the Royal Artillery and by 1941 he was in Malta.

The remainder of the cards I am unable to be certain of what year they are from so I have posted them below together.
Below I have added some of the writing from the cards. It will mainly be of interest to family members who will know the people who wrote them, but everyone is welcome to read them.
Two cards from Grandma Hogan ( Mary Flaherty )
From Auntie Winifred Hogan
From Uncle Dick Sudworth and below from him and his wife Ann ( Hughes )
From Nana Owens ( Sarah Ann Cain )
My Dad was evacuated with his Mum to Holywell, North Wales when the bombing began in 1940. Thanks to Auntie Winifred Hogan we have the address they stayed at and even the name of the lady the lodged with, Mrs Sale. This card is from the end of March 1941 and the bombings in Liverpool had by now become heavy. Auntie Win writes ' May You Live To See Many More ' Now is Win getting worried by what she is seeing happen back in her city and by how the war is going? Just 6 weeks after sending this card Win would bear witness to the horrific May Blitz of Liverpool.
Uncle Austin Owens Auntie Maggie ( Mcinerney )
Uncle Tom and Auntie Winifred Hogan, Brother and Sister of Bernard who died in WW2
From his Mother Ellen
Grandma Hogan
From John and Cis Hogan ( Sarah Anne Grant )
From Aunty Win Hogan and Uncle Hugh ( Griffin )
From Uncle Tommy Hogan and Aunty Winnie ( Winifred Basson )
Liverpool 3 or 5? Make yer mind up will yer
The above card is from Uncle Tommy Hogan. Like many of the cards it features a boy and a girl as my dad Bernard grew up with his cousin mary Hogan. Uncle Tom has wrote their names above each child and even gave us the name of the family pet Queenie.
In his message below Uncle Tom has written ' May your dad be home for your fifth ' Of course this is my dad's 4th Birthday and Uncle Tom is talking about my dad's father ( Tom's brother ) who is away fighting in Malta. Sadly he never returned home.
